Firstly, I’d like to say a heartful ‘thank you’ for your time, interest, and consideration of my support to as your doula. I’m Andrea Dickson and I’m the owner of Matrescence Australia - a full spectrum doula service that provides education as well as physical and emotional support to birthing people, no matter the outcome of pregnancy. Like so many others called to this kind of work, it is almost impossible to separate my own deeply personal, lived experiences from wanting to support, nurture and walk alongside others as they navigate their own path through similar experiences. To share with you my ‘why’, I also have to share with you that my business was founded as a legacy to my son, Theodore. What began with loss, found it’s way to understanding, connection and helping others. His short existence was profound and life changing for me in many ways, but ultimately led me to leave a decade long career in marketing and communications to pursue my Doula certification. Theo’s essence is in all that I do, right down to the flannel flower represented in the brand logo, which in the Language of Flowers means ‘what is lost will be found’. Whilst providing support to mothers and birthing people during the sacred window of time that is pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period is my ‘bread and butter’, it is important for me to acknowledge the duality of outcomes experienced during pregnancy and send comfort to those who have also walked this path.
